Kimsooja is an artist who specializes in video and the moving image. She is one of the most renowned Korean artists in the international art scene. Internationally known as Kimsooja, her original name is Soo-ja Kim.

Her work has been exhibited in Asia, North America, and Europe. In 2013 “Kimsooja, To Breathe: Bottari” represented the Korean Pavilion at the 55th Venice Biennale.

In her work, the artist addresses issues such as the roles of women in the world and the importance of the human being in today’s chaotic world. In a series of videos created in Nepal, Israel, Yemen, Cuba, Brazil, and Chad entitled “A Needle Woman,” 2005, the artist assumes her metaphorical role of a needle that “transcends cultures, geography, and even time in an act of deep self-affirmation that questions the basic human behavior, while sawing together seemingly unrecognizable elements of life.”

Her work has been the subject of monographic exhibitions at the Baltic Center for Contemporary Art, Gateshead, Great Britain, 2009; National Museum of Contemporary Art, South Korea, 2010; Miami Art Museum, Miami, 2012; Vancouver Art Gallery, Vancouver, Canada, 2013; La Fábrica, Madrid, 2014; and Centre Pompidou Metz, Metz, France, 2015.  http://www.kimsooja.com
